It’s all in the family

West Side Story will be performed in New Bern in mid- to late-July

"When you're a Jet," sings Riff in the opening scenes of West Side Story, "... You're a family man."

Fitting then that RiverTowne Repertory Players' production of the seminal musical is all in the family:

There's Chris Hollatchek, who plays the part of Bernardo - and Dottie Schindler Hollatchek, his mom, who's directing the play.

Kristy and Nicky Smith, cast as dancers, are sisters who will also be working with their stepfather, Nelson Miller, on the lighting crew.

Sara Hand is cast as a Jet Girl while her sister, Rachel Hand, is part of the backstage crew. Their father, Bill Hand, will play Lieutenant Schrank.

Cast as Chino and Maria are bother and sister Sean and Tiffany Springle.

Kris Pierson is the musical's lighting designer and sibling Ingrid Pierson is in the cast as tomboy and Jet-wannabe Anybodys. Their mother, Karen Pierson, is the producer.

And then there are the less formal "family" connections of voice teacher Freddie Angoco, playing Tony, and a number of his former students, including Tiffany Springle. Longtime friends Chris Hollatchek and Ciara DiNapoli, cast as Anita, help complete the family tree.

"There's been some really cool chemistry with these kids," Dottie Hollatchek said during a recent rehearsal.

Even if that chemistry has the potential to turn somewhat volatile.

"It's both good and bad," said veteran actor Chris Hollatchek (Plaza Suite) about working with his mother. "She gives me tips at home, but if I'm not at practice. ..."

"It's an interesting experience," said Angoco (Oklahoma!, The King and I). "It can be uncomfortable."

For DiNapoli (Grease) acting is about tackling such prickly situations, even in the company of friends.

Her least favorite scene as Anita?

"The scene where she's taunted and teased by the Jets - it's an uncomfortable scene," she said.

But her favorite?

"Probably the same scene. I like to work hard."

Hard work could be the signature line of every member of this production. During a full cast rehearsal of the rumble scene, taut choreography is accented by brisk crews working stage design, lighting and sound.

"It's really come together," said Tiffany Springle.
